Hairy Legs: To Shave or Not To Shave?

hairy legsThis is not a subject some ladies like to talk about openly. Well, forgive me because I want to talk about it. Ladies have hair on their legs, the thick, dark and bushy kind, which you dare not show anyone. The type you will see on men like the picture to your right.  There I said it. Now get over it and stay with me. I have always wondered who made the rules that ladies must shave their legs or use hair removing cream and every other form of evasive hair removal procedure in order to attain the ultimate hair-free legs?  Yes, it looks good when its all done and yes, smooth too and the brothers whistle as you walk past them with those toned and clean legs, looking fly! If it causes you no pain, fabulous, go right ahead and keep shaving or using hair cream.

However, there are some of us, who also have toned legs and want them to be hair-free but due to reasons beyond our control, we do so, at our own risk. It is not because we don’t want to wear pencil or mini skirts. We would love to show off our legs but if shaving/using hair removing cream is doing us more harm than good, what choice do you have but to say…’my health and life first,’ beauty can follow. By now, even a day-old baby understands that we are a superficial beauty obsessed world/society. We must look good on the outside though our attitude and character  stinks like dog shit!  Don’t get it twisted, I believe in looking after yourself and putting your best self forward. The question is, at what cost?

I see men walking down the street in the last few days with no shirts on, showing off their abs/six-pack or in the case of one guy, whose friends are so mean, they didn’t tell him, his pot belly was not ideal for the swagger he was trying to pull off. Some were wearing shorts and had hairy and ‘yammy’ legs, no one says anything or looks at them funny. Yet, if a lady goes out in shorts and has hair on her legs, all hell breaks loose and people turn to look at her like she is crazy or go as far as using derogatory terms, calling it DIRTY! Allow me but I know men, who love women with hairy legs, in fact, there are certain cultures, where a woman with hairy legs is considered beautiful for the hair gracing her leg like coconut on the nipples of a woman having foreplay before sex.  My mum once had a friend, whose husband loved her hairy legs and the day she decided to shave it off, hell hath no fury like a man denied of his fetish.

moniqueLet’s get one thing straight, this is not a men vs women issue. For me, it is simply, who made the rules that shaving or using hair removing cream is a do or die affair? When Mo’Nique went to the Golden Globes in 2009, and showed her hairy legs, the tabloids and gossip columns went crazy with the debate of why a woman like her should have hairy legs? Some even went as far as dissing her husband in not so polite ways but I believe she gave the best response to the self imposed hygiene critics when she told Barbara Walters, “he loves the hairy legs and if Sid likes the hairy legs, there you go…”I’m 42 and I’m very hairy.” You gotta love Mo’Nique.

It would be unfair to say a lady who does not shave her legs or use other forms of hair removal is dirty. That is far from the truth. I don’t deny some of us can be lazy but if anyone out there, like me has a highly sensitive skin and shaving is a no, no because I will pay for my sins later or the fact that hair removing cream leaves me with red and itchy patches all over and for days result in blisters, your opinion is irrelevant. For starters, I have a medical condition, rely heavily on immuno-suppressants which can cause your body to act funny at different points and my skin can be dry today and tomorrow, oh well, I have lost track of the number of times it has changed on me. This is in addition to the fact that they make my hair grow at an unexplainable rate. Recently, I found a solution to the challenge I was having with my scalp and hair and that was after almost two years of trying different things. I am still on the search for something to use for my skin. Hence, your idea of what makes a lady beautiful really does not matter to me because avoiding any more medical mishaps, when I am highly prone to infections as a result of using different chemicals on my skin means one thing and one thing only. My health is priority over hair-free legs.

shavingFrom shaving to waxing to hair cream to laser, there is no pain-free procedure and did I mention, they are all expensive forms of hair removing miracles with the exception of shaving. Now, you may say they have hair removing cream for sensitive skin? Well, that’s what left me with red patches and blisters and it was not a cheap brand that I bought either. If you go to Boots or Superdrug, they have a wide range to look through and make-up  your mind. On the other hand, it was never like this. It is only recently that my skin started reacting badly to hair removing cream. Laser is not an option. I have better things to do with my money. It is summer, time for the short skirts and dresses we all love but for me, the dilemma is how do I get through this summer with red and itchy patches if they continue? I have been waging a one-woman protest over the last few months and refused to use the hair removing cream. Though I have also been on the search for alternative natural options, one thing is certain, I will not put my skin into more unavoidable hassles all in the name of looking good. If I don’t find a natural alternative soon, looks like I will be wearing tights all summer and that is a not a good prospect, especially when you take into account, this summer is going to be sizzling hot. Fingers crossed, we all don’t fry! In the meantime, I will join India Arie and sing…

Sometimes I shave my legs and sometimes I don’t
Sometimes I comb my hair and sometimes I won’t
Depend on how the wind blows I might even paint my toes
It really just depends on whatever feels good in my soul

  1. Well my song will forever be shave it, wax it, remove it with cream or my personal fav, epilate it. Your arms, your lips, your face, your legs, your secret garden.

side note -I think that cream starts to react funny after a while. It stopped working for me years ago. In my early-mid teens.

  2. Bess, that seems like a lot of work and while I would gladly do it, not at the expense of adding more files to my already large medical notebook with the GP and consultant 🙂 It is proving to be a stupid joker on my skin right now…let’s see how it goes been that I have not used any for months!! I really do want to wear my short skirts too 🙂

  3. Oh dear, my itches and red patches last 24hrs, so I do understand what you talking about. I think the rules applies automatically like wearing a Bra.

So I will sing along with Bess, but the lips and face I will omit.

  4. Hmmmn, Deborah, wearing a bra you have to do for your own protection and to keep the breast in place but shaving legs and using every other evasive form of hair removal in the name of vanity is now a bit much for me. Self-hygiene YES! but do or die affair, NO! Sometimes, it would be nice to be a woman/lady and be free with one’s self without adhering to the world bible of beauty rules. Besides, the more you shave, the worse it gets and you start having bumps and all like a…I am tired of my skin burning due to hair removal cream…the sooner I find a natural alternative, the better…

  5. Thank you Belinda,
I have been reading several of your articles and they are all very fascinating. You raise some questions that i think are key as long as we are still on this planet. On the topic of shaving legs, i feel like the definition of beauty is constantly redefined, and is getting narrower by the day. Personally i do not shave my legs because the hair don’t grow, but i can speak for people who shave because i am surrounded by them. What i have realized in my daily interactions with women who shave, the reason is always for appearance purposes, and to be noticed by men or to receive approval from our social groups. Society as a whole is twisted. These companies that sell these beauty products have realized that women like to shop, so each time they come up with a problem in our bodies that needs to be fixed. Its funny because the owners of most of these companies are men, and they are here defining to us what we should look like. Its all for financial gain and unfortunately we have embraced everything. Like you, i am for looking clean, neat and presentable, but these external forces that exert pressure on women to mend their physique is too much and we have to say now. Yes to Monique, yes to India Arie and all these role models, and thank you for sharing.

  6. @ Dark child, thanks for taking the time to visits my website and read my articles. I am honoured. Interesting points you raise on the shaving issue and definition of beauty. I guess, it is going to keep changing, it is down to us as individuals to decide what we want for ourselves. I was using razor sometime ago and before I knew what was happening, my skin started acting funny, had to go to the GP, who finally told me, my skin and razor will never be friends. I still have the effects of the aftermath but what can I do. So, I stopped before I start looking for a new solution to the effects of using razor and then I started using the cream and that was fine until recently… well, I guess the saying, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, should be one that we listen to more…

I am feeling your website and the images. Nice one and well done!

    Take care 🙂

  7. I’m with India, sometimes I shave, sometimes I don’t and I don’t care, I started to notice about two years ago that my other half didn’t notice and when I asked him about it he didn’t care, he said the hair on your legs is the LAST thing I think about when……actually let me end it there lol

  8. I live in Moscow, in Russia.
It to be pleasant to me, when the woman has hairy hands, shins and armpits.
I think that tendencies to depilate standing, came to us from the West. The numerous companies producers of epilators, razors for the women, special cosmetics carry widely out the advertizing companies, convincing women to depilate standing. Their care – increase in the profits. Actually, I consider, this invented problem. In the province the relation to it even more liberally, than in the large cities. Women with hairy feet, it is valid actually hairy not much. I practically don’t observe them. I think, there is no sense to women to be perverted and depilate standing. For men it is the fact testifying to developed sexual signs of the woman and consequently hairy feet, a pubis look very sexually. Still I consider that women overestimate the hairiness standing, captiously considering them close. At stay in a public place hair standing aren’t so appreciable, not so are evident. I was familiar with several women which feet seemed not hairy. My amazement when on closer examination, I saw hair on their feet is great.
However, if women so want, let delete them. But if the hair isn’t a lot of, they short and thin and evenly cover feet, there is no sense of it to do. Why? Your body is covered with hairs, pay attention to the hands, a stomach and the person, for certain they there too are. At least the appreciable down precisely is present. If will shave feet then there will be a discrepancy with hair on hands on a stomach. In general I consider, when the body of the person is absolutely deprived of hair is looks is repellent and it is unnatural. Imagine a cold white paunch of a frog or a plastic doll. Here such associations cause deprived of the hair, scraped out moreover and not suntanned white feet. By the way, lovely ladies who are so anxious with hair, you look attentively at the hands. I am sure, as they at you too hairy, can, of course, and not in such measure as feet. For some reason about them you absolutely forget. Can be them too to shave?! Repeatedly saw girls with the scraped-out feet and hairy hands. Well for nonsense? You then shave everything or nothing. So a problem with hair at women standing the obviously far-fetched. And many of these women simply don’t represent, what can look REALLY hairy female feet. For example the Caucasian or Tajik women, in comparison with which, their legs simply bald.

  9. I came across ur article while searching for the origin of this shaving thingy…. i cannot agree any less with you…. i moved to the US and it was quite a shock to see how everyone here reacts to hairy leg or women. Well i always tell them “welcome to my world”… i am quite hairy and have a few on my chest…. i foolishly went to wax the few on my chest and girl my skin has not been the same ever since… for me that is something i regret everyday i look at my chest because it resulted in “in grown hair”. I ve gone to see a dermatologist and none of the options they ve profered is acceeptable because of the side effects…. As for my legs i will never try shaving it… anyone dt does not like it should not look at it or better still deal with it. I love my hairy legs and that is all that matters… i dress to look good for myself and not for anyone… U know its funny how one person will start something (perhaps crazy to the person at that time) and then everyone start copying that and next it becomes fashion trendy… U gotta love urself

  10. I am a 60 yr.old man.women with hairy legs have always been sexyto me.l have always been turned off by shaved legs .lt is ulgy and unnatural.

  11. I’m a female and 20 years old. I never thought of shaving my hair on legs. Even when my sister asked me to shave it, I just said ” Nah. I don’t see what’s wrong having hair on legs.” :))
