When Babies Have Babies, What Happens Next?
We live in a world where a lot of things happen and sometimes, we pay more attention to things far away than the ones closer to us. The Al Jazeera documentary below, Caught In The Cradle, reminds me of the things in our individual societies which need our attention. I would like to claim it is shocking to know the statistics of teenage pregnancy in the US, but I am not. For years, our babies have been having babies. Government approach in various countries have worked and in others, failed woefully. And in some instances, it seems there are young people, who have been encouraged to go right ahead, shack up, make babies, call yourself baby mama or baby father and if anyone criticises…they are small minded for being judgmental…
I don’t know about you but responsibility starts in the home. We cannot and must not leave our children’s welfare to their teachers or government policies. We have to set our own family policies and take a stand, fully aware that people will do what they want to do, when they want to do it and how they want to do. Nevertheless, that should not stop us from taking charge of our homes and letting our babies know there is a time and a season for everything. No one is against you having a child but first things first, think about your future, the type of life you want for yourself and the one you want to create for your children. Listening to these young parents, I’m inclined to think…they would have done things differently if they could do it all over. The world has moved away from the days of no sex before marriage, everyone is doing it…they say. Well, if you are going to do IT – you know, have sex – count the cost when you do it without taking proper care. After the pleasure and the high of orgasm, be prepared to take care of the babies that come with the orgasmic spill, sperm has one function, fertilise your eggs. So, ready or not, they are going to come.
The way I see it, you cannot stop anyone from doing what they have set their heart on but you can help and make them think about tomorrow rather than focus on the greatest discovery they have ever made. Sex is not a new thing, people have been at it for ages and will continue to be at it for as long as men and women live. Talking about it is one way of dispelling the myth that it is this huge secret, children must never know about. Come what may, supporting them even when they get the order wrong is key because there are women and men, who had children while young, learnt their lesson, well some did and it didn’t stop them from pursuing great things in life.
